The difficulty in accessing the New Scientist online from Yale

(1) Here’s a New Scientist article I wanted to access:

The truth about social media and screen time’s impact on young people There are many scary claims about excess time on digital devices for children and teenagers. Here’s a guide to the real risks – and what to do about them

“Get off your phone!” Most parents will have found themselves yelling some version of this at their offspring – often to be met with eye-rolls.
We have all found ourselves spending more time on screens in recent years, with the rise of smartphones and social media. Children are no exception. The covid-19 pandemic also resulted in a huge rise in their screen time as a result of lockdowns and school closures.

In print, this was on the cover, viz:

https://www.amazon.sg/Scientist-Magazine-22-28-Growing-Online/dp/B0D8MXYWM4

It also had the tagline “Digital Damage” somewhere in the print edition.

(2) A simple google + intuitive URL takes me here:

https://www.newscientist.com/article/mg26234960-900-the-truth-about-social-media-and-screen-times-impact-on-young-people/

However, I can only see the beginning of the article.
Trying to access via “Educational access sign in” doesn’t work from Yale. (It doesn’t matter whether I’m on the Yale VPN or not.)

(Note that if you have a proper New Scientist print login
subscription, you can access it by a simple sign-in.)

(3) Then I try googling with the story tagline
“Digital Damage Michael Marshall June 2024 new scientist”, viz:

https://www.google.com/search?q=digital+damage+Michael+Marshall++June+2024+new+scientist

However, googling the full title (“The truth about social media and screen time’s impact on young people Michael Marshall June 2024 new scientist”) does not work.

(4) Now I get to :

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0262407924011461

Here, it says: “YALE UNIVERSITY does not subscribe to this content on ScienceDirect.”

However, there’s a “Yale links” banner at the top, which I click on

It says:

(5) Finally, I click on the words “full text” and get the text of the article (without images).
This only works on the Yale VPN.

The text begins thus:

There are few more contentious issues for parents than children’s screen time. What does the evidence show about its effects? Michael Marshall investigates

GET off your phone!” Most parents will have found themselves yelling some version of this at their offspring -often to be met with eye-rolls.

We have all found ourselves spending more time on sereens in recent years, with the rise of smartphones and social media. Children are no exception. The covid-19 pandemic also resulted in a huge rise in their screen time as a result of lockdowns and school closures.

Note that it does not have the original title from the New Scientist site (“The truth about social media and screen time’s impact on young people”).
