Does coffee increase cancer risk? | Interviews | Naked Scientists

September 16, 2022

Liked the discussion of the paper by @stevesphd on Coffee Consumption
& Cancer Risk (https://clinicalnutritionjournal.com/article/S0261-5614(22)00313-2/fulltext). However, I was surprised that the elevation of stomach acid & GERD from caffeine was not mentioned as a potential reason for the association with esophageal cancer.

It’s easy to get confused about whether milk is an acid or a base, especially when you consider that some people drink milk or take calcium to treat an acidic stomach. Actually, milk has a pH of around 6.5 to 6.7, which makes it slightly acidic. Some sources cite milk as being neutral since it is so close to the neutral pH of 7.0. However, milk contains lactic acid, which is a hydrogen donor or proton donor. If you test milk with litmus paper, you’ll get a neutral to a slightly acidic response.

QT:{{”
Lemons are extremely acidic. Any chemical with a pH less than 7 is considered acidic. Lemon juice has a pH of around 2.0, ranging between 2 and 3. To put that in perspective, the pH of battery acid (sulfuric acid) is 1.0, while the pH of an apple is about 3.0. Vinegar (a weak acetic acid) has a pH comparable to lemon juice, around 2.2. The pH of soda is about 2.5.
