Opinion | I’m Begging You: Never Write With A.I.

A letter I wrote in response to this:

I read Bret Stephens’ recent editorial about why we shouldn’t use AI for writing with great interest. It was a wonderfully written piece. However, I disagree with it. Stephens has the luxury of telling us not to use AI for writing because he’s such a good writer himself. What about all the people who can’t write as well as he can and for whom AI is beneficial, particularly non-native English speakers?

I like to compare AI writing to an elevator. It’s easy for a person who is in great athletic shape to say, “Don’t take the elevator. It’s great exercise to walk upstairs.” But many people need elevators and simply can’t make it upstairs. Furthermore, the advent of the elevator helps even fit people reach new building heights that simply would not be possible under their own power. In a similar way, I think AI will allow us to create things – both written and beyond – that are simply beyond unassisted human power.

So while I thought Stephens’ piece was great, it’s time for skilled writers to embrace the progress of AI — and not resent it.
